QR Code Error Correction Levels

QR codes have built-in error correction that allows them to be read even if partially damaged or obscured. Higher levels add more redundancy.

Level L (Low) — 7% recovery

Best for clean environments where the QR code won't be damaged. Produces the smallest QR codes. Use for digital screens and clean print.

Level M (Medium) — 15% recovery

Good balance of size and durability. Suitable for most print materials like flyers, posters, and business cards.

Level Q (Quartile) — 25% recovery

Recommended when adding a logo to the center of your QR code. The logo covers part of the code, so higher error correction compensates.

Level H (High) — 30% recovery

Maximum durability. Use for outdoor signage, product packaging, or anywhere the QR code might be exposed to wear and tear. Best choice when adding a logo.

QR Code Best Practices

Follow these guidelines to ensure your QR codes scan reliably every time.

Maintain a Quiet Zone

Always keep a blank margin (quiet zone) around the QR code — at least 4 modules wide. This helps scanners detect the code boundaries.

Minimum Size for Print

For printed materials, the QR code should be at least 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 inches). For posters and signage viewed from a distance, scale up proportionally.

Use High Error Correction with Logos

When placing a logo in the center, set error correction to Level Q or H (25–30%). This ensures the code still scans despite the logo covering part of it.

Ensure Color Contrast

The foreground (dark) modules must contrast strongly with the background (light). Dark on light works best. Never put dark QR codes on dark backgrounds.

Test Before Printing

Always scan your QR code with multiple devices (iPhone, Android, different apps) before printing a large batch.

Use PNG or SVG for Print

Download as SVG for scalable vector quality, or PNG at 500px+ for raster prints. Avoid JPG for print due to compression artifacts.

Keep URL Short

Shorter URLs produce simpler, smaller QR codes that scan faster and are more reliable. Use the built-in URL shortener for long links.

QR Code Design Tips

Make your QR codes visually appealing while keeping them scannable.

Add Your Brand Logo

Place your company logo or an emoji in the center of the QR code. Use error correction Level H to maintain scannability. Keep the logo under 30% of the QR code area.

Use Custom Colors

Match your brand colors — but always keep high contrast. Use dark foreground on light background. Test after changing colors.

Choose a Dot Shape

Square dots look technical, rounded dots feel modern, and circle dots give a friendly appearance. Match the style to your brand.

Add a Call-to-Action

Place text like 'Scan Me' or 'View Menu' above or below the QR code to increase scan rates.

Use Frames

A border frame around the QR code draws attention and provides space for your call-to-action text.
